Our aim of the community allotments is to provide a safe environment for people of all abilities to learn, grow and develop skills such as gardening, sharing and patience.
We feel that by having a community garden it builds community spirit and brings together people from every background and age. It also means we can encourage positive impacts for physical, mental and emotional health and well-being by growing good food in a healthy environment and by learning how to get the best out of inexpensive ingredients.
Currently there are over 25 plots at the Sheppey Mill Green Project (SMGP). The facilities include –
The allotments are also home to The Wellie Club, which is particularly successful in the education of young people on the effects of climate change as well as the benefits of growing your own food and healthy eating.
We have also supported local businesses by providing plants for hanging baskets for the Sheerness town displays as well as providing flowering plants, veg and planting containers for local organisations.
The project has 2-4 serving offenders assisting on site and who also help to maintain the War Memorial Garden in Sheerness
Our success has now been followed by a Silver Award granted by the Kent Wildlife Trust for the creation of our wildlife garden.
