As part of a local regeneration project Sheppey Matters sourced funding to landscape and maintain the War Memorial Garden.
The garden was unloved for many years, and became an eye-sore strewn with weeds; it was no longer a respectful venue for the Island’s annual act of remembrance.
However, working in conjunction with Sheppey Tourism Alliance, funding was sought and secured from the Island’s County Councillor, Queenborough Fisheries Trust and Swale Borough Council.
A competition was held via The Sheerness Times Guardian asking for plans and ideas for the new garden. Three winners were chosen and they helped create the garden which was finished in time for the 2012 Remembrance Sunday ceremony.
Lawn and bedding plants have started to mature which provide a pleasing area around the memorial itself, while background bushes and trees will be tended to throughout the year by our Community Gardener (Nicola) and local volunteers.
If you would like to come and help by volunteering and looking after an important community point in Sheppey please ring 01795 585335 and ask for Nicola or email sheppeygardener@hotmail.com
