Well Life – Community Gardener
The Community Gardener team, Gemma and Joe, are working in collaboration with the Community Chef, Jason and the Everyday Active Champion, Julie as part of the Well Life project. We aim to bring lots of activities and events for all ages to get involved in, to feel better, try new things and get active….to live a ‘Well Life’.
We have a community allotment in Sheerness, growing fruit and vegetables for the Community Chef and the wider community, to support and encourage ‘plot to plate’.
We have recently held an herb planting session with Sheppey Dad’s Matters – choosing, and planting the herbs on the plot in readiness for another session with the Community Chef later in the summer, where the group will pick the herbs and cook a dish with them. Looking forward to that!
In May we launched a Sunflower Growing Competition, where we gave away sunflower growing packs. We are looking forward to seeing who the winner is later in the summer and have already started receiving pictures of them growing! If you picked up a pack, please email your progress pictures to office@sheppeymatters.org.uk – you might just be the winner!
We have spent some time tidying up the existing flower tubs at Beachfields and planted some bee friendly seeds. We have also put some drought tolerant plants in the planters at the entrance to the Sheppey Healthy Living Centre in Sheerness, so that they look their best for the summer.
Check our Facebook page and the Rural Youth page on the website for updates on summer activities on the allotment, for young people aged 8-12 years – Ready, Steady, Grow!
Gardening and fresh air are proven to have both physical and mental health benefits for our wellbeing, and the sense of achievement when you have grown, and harvested produce and flowers can also bring positive benefits.
If you as an individual, or as part of a community group are interested in joining us on our growing journey, please get in touch – we would love to hear from you!
