Thanks to guests both young and old who attended, big thanks to the Mayor of Swale, Councillor Colin Prescott who opened the event.
This display is part of Swale Borough Councils WW1 Remebrance Commerations and is Sheppey Gateway’s contribution to the RBL’s Kent Knitted Poppy Parade Remebrance 2017. A special thanks to sarah-Jane Radley maanger of the Sheppey Gateway whose tireless support has tmade he event possible and to Sheernesss Library and to KCC Libraries across swale for collectting the poppies and promoting us to local people and knitting groups.
In all about 3,000 donated poppies were knitted and crocheted by the public from aged from as young as 8 to our oldest knitter Joyce who turned 98 years old! The poppies form the backdrop of the display in the foyer of Sheppey Gateway. (on show till the 24th Novemeber).
As part of 2017’s RBL Rethink Remebrance, the event featured comissioned art work from Studio 4186 with support from Trinity School and poems read by pupils of St Georges School, Minster and local noted poet Clair Meyrick.
Sheppey Matters are pleased to have been associated with this event and to have been supported with funding from Swale Borough Council’s WW1 Centenary Grant Scheme, to help create, make and install our Knitted Poppy Garden Display. We would like to thanks the knitters who made poppies and those young people and many members of our community who helped assemble the Poppy Garden, volunteering their time and creativity.
We look foward to seeing everyone next year for the 100 years since WW1 ended and joining us at the Sheppey Gateway for our 2018 display and events.
