On Monday 30th June 2025, the Legacy Project, run by Sheppey Matters to support over 60s in the community who may be experiencing loneliness or isolation, enjoyed a truly special morning at Elmley Nature Reserve.
Despite the heat, the group took part in a gently paced 90-minute guided walk through stunning marshland, led by three expert Elmley guides. The walk provided plenty of stops to appreciate the rich variety of wildlife from rare bees and butterflies to speeding dragonflies and the haunting call of the curlew.
Participants were also privileged to see recently hatched curlew chicks, being cared for ahead of their release into the wild – a rare and heartwarming glimpse into Elmley’s conservation work.
The morning was filled with peace, learning, and laughter. Participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to connect with nature and each other:
“What a lovely morning. Thank you to Sam and Mikaela for organising. The three guides were brilliant – friendly and knowledgeable. Will definitely come again.”
“It was very tranquil and relaxing while learning about the wildlife. Although very hot, it was a really lovely start to the day.”
“Another delightful day out with Legacy. Just about right for an exceedingly hot day had we known, some of us might have taken a dip in the very inviting pool!”
“Birdsong is the only thing that takes my tinnitus away, so it’s wonderful for me to actually have a break from the noise in my head.”
This visit showcased the powerful connection between community and conservation, offering participants not just a day out, but a chance to breathe deeply, share stories, and feel a sense of belonging in nature. A huge thank you to Sam, Mikaela, and the Elmley team for making such a meaningful experience possible – we’re already looking forward to the next one!
