On Thursday 31st July 2025, Sheppey Matters proudly hosted Boob Voyage: The Breast Journey — a bold, themed community event focused on raising awareness around breast cancer, early detection, and local support services. Held at IslandWorks, Dockyard Church, Sheerness, this one-of-a-kind event welcomed over 200 attendees and marked a major milestone in Sheppey Matters’ ongoing commitment to accessible community health education.
The event transformed the venue into an immersive travel experience, with guests guided through four interactive zones:
- Mammogram Mountains
- Symptom Safari
- Prevention Paradise
- Support Bay
Each zone was designed to empower individuals with life-saving knowledge through NHS services, charities, and wellness practitioners offering practical advice, resources, and one-to-one support. From symptom checklists to lifestyle changes that reduce cancer risk, attendees were encouraged to explore each area and get their Pink Passport stamped — unlocking a place in our free prize draw.
The engagement from local businesses and health professionals was phenomenal. Huge thanks go to:
- Elmley Nature Reserve, who generously donated an overnight stay in one of their luxury shepherd huts
- Hempstead House, for their spa and lunch package at Aquamanda
- The Oast, for contributing a wellness treatment voucher
- Plus many more who offered raffle prizes, wellness products, and hands-on support
On the night, representatives from the Medway Breast Care Unit, Macmillan Cancer Support, local smoking cessation services, and independent therapists and coaches provided invaluable insights and support. Highlights included guided meditation sessions, fitness tasters, and free green smoothies at our tiki-style bar.
Why It Mattered
With breast cancer screening uptake in Swale sitting at just 62.6% — well below the national average — and early diagnosis rates alarmingly low, events like Boob Voyage play a vital role in tackling health inequalities on the Isle of Sheppey. By blending education with creativity and community spirit, we helped break down barriers around a difficult topic and inspired meaningful conversations about breast health.
Looking Ahead
The success of Boob Voyage not only raised awareness — it also laid the foundation for future targeted health events. Thanks to attendee data collected on the night, we are exploring how Sheppey Matters can work in partnership with local business, charities and organisations to deliver further outreach.
We’re proud to say that Boob Voyage didn’t just entertain — it informed, inspired, and empowered.
Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, donated, or supported behind the scenes. Together, we’ve made a difference.
